Bargain Queen Meg has a post about why fashion trends matter. She talks about the difference between making trends work for you and being a fashion victim, noting that top fashion industry people are not themselves slaves to trends.
One way to make trends work for you and to keep your wardrobe from looking outdated is to pay attention to details. For example, look at how the shape of women’s t-shirts has changed over the last two decades:
Notice how tees have gotten tighter since the 80’s. Sleeves have also gotten tighter and shorter as shirt length has gone up then back down again. This is one reason I buy a couple new, inexpensive t-shirts at Target twice a year. They’re always the right shape and the right colors, and they’re both practical and inexpensive.
Thanks for the link! I love how you’ve shown the difference between something as simple as t-shirts! Details certainly do matter.
Thanks for that reminder about the importance of details in fashion trends. I find it difficult when I really like a style and it goes out of fashion. Details like belts, scarves and jewellery can really help. For example, smocks are pretty much out now in Melbourne, but I love my smocks, so I now wear them clinched with a wide belt.
I also bought a little silk scarf in a black and white pattern for $7 at a Boxing Day sale. Worn knotted around the neck, choker style, it transforms a pair of boot jeans and a black V-neck long sleeved knit top into something approaching classy!
Catherine, belts and scarves are great examples of an accessories that can easily update a wardrobe. Scarves especially, since you can wear them so many ways that they almost never go out of style.
